Infection and Inflammation - The Vicious Circle
In general, bacterial infections of the skin are accompanied by an inflammatory reaction that exacerbates tissue damage. Bacterial toxins, proteolytic enzymes and cellular degradation products induce liberation of inflammatory mediators.
Inflammation and destruction of the cellular texture allow infection to spread. As these processes usually are accompanied by pruritus, self-inflicted trauma due to intensive scratching further aggravates the pathologic condition.
