Drug Concentrations in the Respiratory Tract

Baytril reaches high concentrations in pulmonal and bronchial tissues, as well as in bronchial secretions and in alveolar macrophages, which play an important role in the pulmonary defense system.

Drug concentrations in alveolar macrophages were examined in a recent study on dogs (15).

It was demonstrated that the concentrations of enrofloxacin and its active metabolite ciprofloxacin in alveolar macrophages by far exceeded the corresponding plasma levels.

High amounts of active drug present at the site of infection in tissues, bronchial secretions and phagocytic cells are essential for quick therapeutic success.
