Purulent Inflammation

(1)   Deep folliculitis: note the infection is within the confines of an intact hair follicle.

(2)   Furunculosis: the hair follicle has ruptured, spreading infection into the dermis.

(3)   Remnant of hair shaft within the furuncle: free keratin from root sheath and hair shaft causes foreign body reaction and formation of sequestered foreign body granulomas.
